Long Term Recovery Committee

Mission Statement:

To restore the quality of life to the citizens of Hancock County in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Membership:

Membership consists of over 100 members representing non profits, church groups, businesses, civic groups and local volunteers. The general membrship is inclusive and meets bi-weekly at the Christ Episcopal Church.

Needs Assessments:

AmeriCorp has completed Neeeds Assessments by going door to door in the City of Waveland and Bay St. Louis and are currently doing assessments in Pearlington. This survey has generated 700 cases - given the populations of Waveland and Bay St. Louis there are thousands of people who have not been surveyed. Those needing to complete an Assessment need to call: 228-466-8266

The Christian Reform World Relief Committee has beem contracted to do the Needs Assessment. The needs assessments are conducted by the AmeriCorps Volunteers Results of those assessments are placed in the http://www.can.org/ data base run under the auspices of FEMA.

CAN is an unprecedented, multi-organizational partnership among some of the nation’s leading nonprofit disaster relief organizations.

Working in tandem with state and local relief agencies CAN is forging a new model of disaster recovery and preparedness for the United States.

The cases are prioritized and presented to the Case Managers.

Case Managers:

Case Managers present cases with unmet needs to the Un Met Needs Roundtable whose goal is to provide resources to assist individuals andfamilies in Hancock County.

Un Met Needs Committee:

The Unmet needs committee search to resolve the case with known resources: Insurance, FEMA, SBA, and other known funds and materials sources.

Funding

The committee currently has a Grant in process for $11M.

  • 5M for 500 home reconstructions
  • 1M for Furniture for 1,000 homes
  • 3.5M for replacement of vehicles
  • $350,000 for $500 payments for 300 families
  • $500,000 for the Perlington Civic Center
  • Materials and other donated funds are available to the LTRC such as the materials held by UMCOR up at Jackson.
